  • A sparse group of crew and community members quietly continue butchering the three whales caught on the first successful day of the fall whaling season in Barrow, AK in the early morning of September 23, 2014. Blubber and meat is divided and packed up where it will be taken into homes to be boiled and preserved. Almost none of the whale is wasted.

<br />
The Ear Pull event is one that encourages stamina to pain, such as frost bite, which is a skill sometimes needed to survive in the North. Two athletes sit down facing each other with twine looped around each other's ears--right ear to right ear, then left to left. The athlete must pull straight back from one another and attempt to slip the twine off of his or her opponent's ear.
